AAMA 2604, high performance
Corrosion tested with ASTM B117: 3,000 hours of continuous 5 percent salt-fog exposure. Designed to perform for roughly five years of environmental exposure before meaningful color and gloss change. A strong choice for many inland residential and light-commercial projects.
AAMA 2605, the architectural gold standard
Corrosion tested with ASTM G85 Annex A5: a 2,000-hour cyclic salt-fog test that many consider a more realistic simulation of coastal weathering. Stricter limits on color change, gloss retention, and chalking. Engineered for roughly ten years of exposure, this is the spec typically specified for coastal, high-UV, and demanding commercial applications.
Which one should a Florida project use?
As a practical rule, the closer to salt water and the higher the UV exposure, the stronger the case for AAMA 2605. Coastal and oceanfront projects in Florida frequently require it, and it is the safer specification any time long-term color hold and corrosion resistance are part of the sale. For protected inland work, AAMA 2604 is often a cost-effective fit. When in doubt, spec up; the cost difference is small next to a finish failure.
Powder coating vs. anodizing for Florida fabricators
Anodizing is durable and scratch-resistant, but it has two limits that matter in Florida. First, it is restricted to metallic tones, so you cannot get true colors or woodgrain looks. Second, in coastal and humid environments, anodized aluminum can develop white spots and pitting over time.
Powder coating, by contrast, offers superior salt-spray protection, an unlimited color palette, and compatibility with woodgrain sublimation. For most Florida railing, gate, fence, and canopy work, a properly specified powder coat is the more versatile and more weather-appropriate choice.
